This month, Newport (Shropshire) Liberal Democrats have achieved a record 30 years of service to their local community. Cllr John Evans started producing and delivering the local Focus newsletters in 1977 and has been actively involved ever since. He has been a long-serving Newport councillor on the Town Council, was Mayor of Newport in 2003-4, and also represented Newport on the Telford & Wrekin Council.
With up to six issues a year, Focus has been a way of keeping people informed about what was going on, and asking for their views on a range of topics. John, supported by his wife Irene, who is also a Newport Town Councillor, have been party stalwarts, and over the years have held many of the offices in the branch and the constituency.
At the recent AGM in November 2006, John Evans was elected as President of the constituency party, in recognition of his outstanding contribution. He is planning to retire from active politics this year, and is asking for support in maintaining Focus production and deliveries from now on. Liberal Democrat members, or supporters of the party who would like to help, can contact John on 01952 811734.
