Stop the War March in Whitehall on the way to Parliament Square
Concern about our continuing involvement in Afghanistan is not resolved by Prime Minister Gordon Brown's statement that our troops are helping to bring stability to the region, and this will help to prevent terrorist attacks on the streets of London. The rising death toll during this summer, and lack of equipment, do not inspire confidence that it is a war that can be won, as past history would demonstrate all too clearly.
Action is continuing to draw attention to this unnecessary war. Public opinion in the USA is now in a majority against the war, compared to a year ago. Some of the success for this change in attitude is due to Brave New Foundation's documentary 'Rethink Afghanistan' which has been widely circulated via the internet, with public screenings in various places.
The image shows just one of the marches that has taken place, in London as well as in other major centres, against our involvement in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The pressure will continue, as British deaths mount up above 200, in a conflict that has lasted for 8 years, longer than the second world war, and with little to show for it. The recent elections in Afghanistan are being challenged, and it is a mistake to believe that other cultures will accept 'western' standards.
Thousands of people are taking part in these demonstrations, to show that democracy and freedom have to be sustained by action, to draw attention to the issues and prevent abuse.
