Action on Climate Change
On 21 September, 2300 groups met up in 130 countries to issue a wake-up call to the world's leaders to take climate change seriously, and work towards a Fair, Ambitious and Binding treaty at the Copenhagen talks in December. The 'alarm' was timed for 12:18 when thousands of people rang their leaders to ask them to attend the talks in person, determined to achieve a positive result. The results can be seen on the global campaigning website www.avaaz.org.
Sadly, no activities were planned in Shropshire, despite the importance of global warming to the future of the planet. Even if people tend to dismiss climate change as requiring an urgent need for concerted action, it is commonsense to economise on the earth's resources, and not add to pollution. Britain's carbon emissions have actually increased during this Labour Government, and must be reduced.
The nearest event to Telford and The Wrekin was in Stafford, where a group of people met in the town centre to put their case to the Prime Minister and other government leaders. BBC Radio Stoke and the Staffordshire Post were present to record the event, which aimed to "Make Brown Go Green!" The events were timed in advance of the preparatory climate change talks at the UN on 22 September. It is intended to keep up the pressure to get an historic global treaty in place at Copenhagen to stop a climate catastrophe. Visit the avaaz website at www.avaaz.org for further details.
