A recent Newport FOCUS asked residents what they thought about the prospect of the closure of Newport's Recycling Centre and proposed a petition.
The petition stated:-
Petition in favour of retaining Newport Recycling Centre
"We believe that a Community Recycling Centre site should continue to be provided here in Newport. Current proposals envisage closing Newport's site and making 2/3 larger 'supersites' elsewhere in the Borough. This would cause more travelling and lost time therefore costing more both for Newport Residents and the environment.
Although the Council are improving the kerbside recycling system, this will not compensate for the large amount of material that is currently taken to the existing CRC at Springfield Industrial Site in Station Road. What do you think? Please let us know."
In addition readers were invited to sign the petition statement:
"I/We the undersigned believe that Newport needs to have a comprehensive and expanded Community Recycling Centre in Newport to enable residents to continue recycling locally."
As a result some 277 responses were received and the local LibDem Chair Irene Evans has submitted them to the recycling officer along with this letter:
'Dear Penny,
Having read the article published in the Shropshire Star stating that the Borough Council intended to develop 3 "super" Community Recycling Centres we were concerned that If this went ahead it would be at the expense of the valuable and much used recycling site in Newport.
Consequently, we decided to run a petition in our February FOCUS to see what Newport residents felt about the possible loss of this facility. Enclosed are 227 responses from them.
We believe that in no uncertain terms this demonstrates that the loss of this facility would cause hardship and would be detrimental to the Town and the wider environment
Yours sincerely,
Irene Evans, Chairman Newport Liberal Democrats.'
