Phillip Bennion is a farmer and local councillor with broad experience of connecting urban and rural economies. He served on the Food and Drink Cluster Group with the Regional Development Agency, aiming to make the Region a centre of excellence for the food industry, with nearby Harper Adams University College playing a pivotal role. He believes that renewable energy is the future and is fighting an opencast mining scheme on the edge of his ward. He produces biomass on his farm and is involved in developing renewable energy and climate change policy at a European level.

Educated to PhD level, Phillip is concerned that government cuts to research budgets will leave Britain less able to compete in the global marketplace. He does not trust the Tories to make cuts to public spending in a sensible or responsible manner. At his adoption meeting, Phillip emphasised the need to deal openly with the budget deficit:

"Lib Dems plan to create a sustainable recovery from the recession with a commitment to invest in green technologies. We are the only party that has put forward a coherent plan to address the Labour government's appalling debt. Labour do not deserve another term in office and the Tories cannot be trusted to do any better.

"After 13 years of Labour government, we still live in a society where the worst-off pay a higher proportion of their income in taxes than the well-off. Lib Dems would raise the income tax threshold to £10,000 so that up to four million of the lowest paid would not pay tax at all, and the average earner would be £700 better off.

"To pay for this we need to close tax loopholes and avoidance schemes in off-shore tax havens. It is unlikely that the Conservatives will do anything to affect contributions from their multi-millionaire sponsors!"

Phillip Bennion answered questions put to him by the members present, and he was then approved as the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Telford. The Lib Dems offer real change, compared to more of the same from Labour and the Conservatives, and a general election is your opportunity to achieve it, by voting this time with the Liberal Democrats in Telford for a better Britain!"
