'Dear Electors of Telford,
I am writing to you as postal voters to ask you to vote for me in the General Election on May 6th.
Unlike Labour and the Tories, we Liberal Democrats have a fully costed programme for government for the next Parliament. As a member of our Policy Committee, I have played a full role in helping to draw up our Manifesto. I argued strongly for our new proposal to raise the income tax threshold to £10,000, as I have long believed that it is ludicrous that workers on the minimum wage should have to pay Income Tax. This measure will mean that the vast majority of workers will pay £700 less in tax and pensioners will also be better off.
The gap between rich and poor has widened over the last 30 years of Labour and Tory governments, as tax breaks for the rich have grown and executives have gained the power to award themselves large salaries and bonuses. Labour has presided over an erosion of our tradition of civil liberties such as trial by jury, at the same time as building a vast database state, which is a threat to us all.
A few years ago Gordon Brown pronounced that he had defeated "Boom and Bust" and confined recessions to history. Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable warned at the time that this was wishful thinking and he has made the right call on all of the big economic issues facing the country since. Unlike George Osborne and the Tories, Vince Cable has made clear proposals to both defeat recession and bring the government's horrific deficit under control.
Between now and the election the Tories will try and make out that they need a clear majority if they are to be able to govern effectively. This simply isn't true. Historically, the most successful governments at reining in deficits in developed countries have been where parliaments have been hung and two parties have had to work together. The Tories will tell you that the Lib Dems are just like Labour and Labour will tell you that we are just like the Tories; all in a desperate attempt to persuade you not to vote for us.
The Liberal Democrats have clear and practical solutions to our economic ills; a commitment to protect our environment and build a sustainable low carbon economy; an understanding that we must invest more in the education of our young if we are to prosper in the future; and the courage to restore our freedoms and clean up politics.
If this is the kind of change that you want, you will only get it by voting Liberal Democrat. Don't cast a negative vote on May 6th; vote positively for the Liberal Democrats if you want us to play a part in government.
Yours sincerely,
Phillip Bennion'
