PRESS RELEASE

Building an energy efficient house.

New build

START

'At a meeting this week of Newport Liberal democrats a plethora of building plans for Newport were discussed.

Members gave the old Audco/Gas Works brownfield site a thumbs up as it was central to town facilities, (not on the outskirts) and had a mixture of types in the 61 houses. Concerns were raised however about increasing traffic near to 3 town schools.

More concerns were raised about the proposed Broomfield Road Development because of danger of flooding and being in close proximity to the sewerage works. Members were also not convinced about its suitability as a site, being at the end of an already busy road and children having to cross that road to access the play area. Broomfield Road egresses onto Salters Lane which in itself causes bottlenecks and danger. Rights of Way across and around the site also need to be protected and enhanced. The one pleasing aspect members found on this plan was the 50% (15) affordable houses which we know Newport needs.

The other two proposals which have not yet been registered with Telford & Wrekin Planning Department, i.e. Land between Moorfield School and Moorfield Lane and Land off the A518 Bypass from Church Aston to the old Focus store were both unacceptable because:

  • Loss of greenfield sites for no very good reason

  • Major pressure on facilities, e.g. all schools, Doctors etc.

  • Access problems particularly on Wellington Road for the Moorfield site.

  • It would dramatically increase traffic on all roads on the south side of Newport.

  • Disappointment that there was no additional employment provision on land originally earmarked for employment use.

The A518 proposal also poses the question that with a new Supermarket and Filling Station would a Supermarket or Filling Station then close in the Town? Any jobs gained would then be lost! These two Retail developments would also increase light pollution on the edge of the Town.

These two proposals combined would add potentially 800 families, of which the majority would need to commute due to lack of work opportunities in Newport and so will not add to the life of the Town.
